Why hunger?

Food Pantry in Orlando

The Orlando area ranked number 10 in the nation for food hardship, with 23.6% of the population struggling, which is higher than the state's and national averages.

Many seniors enter their retirement years on a tight budget. The number of food insecure seniors is projected to increase by 50% when the youngest of the Baby Boomer Generation reaches age 60 in 2025.

For too many seniors, unexpected expenses lead to difficult financial decisions like having to choose between food, medicine and utilities. Their grocery budgets are usually reduced first by cutting out the more expensive and more nutritious food like fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy.

Seniors are a very vulnerable segment of the population, given the fact that they are less likely to recover from financial strain and as a consequence, most likely to suffer negative health issues related to a poor diet. Studies have shown food insecure seniors are 2.33 times more likely to be in fair or poor health.

Also, one in six children lives on the brink of hunger in Florida. The number is closer to one in four for Central Florida.  There are approximately 400,000 people living in poverty which is almost 20% of the population.

Orlando has a higher percentage of children in poverty that are in school ages, than the rest of Florida or the entire United States.

To reach out to those in our community who find themselves in need, helping to provide them with food, shelter, and life opportunities; while gathering enough funding and resources from various sources in the community to make it sustainable.

There are many ways to help DNF Foodbank in our mission of aiding those with very limited resources, such as donating to our organization either monetarily or in food and other basic human essentials (i.e. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, etc.), remember no donation is too small, and all of it goes to someone who is in need of it.

You may also  apply to volunteer at our DNF Foodbank, taking on responsibilities and duties that will help us to better serve the community.
